Five Stars for Rosebud!
Rosebud is a new children's classic no matter what city you live in. The author showcases her incredible artistic talents not only through the words she writes, but in the illustrations she creates. We loved every page!

Sally rocks!
This book is truly a masterpiece of postmodern children's literature. And besides, the author is an amazing person.

Rosebud Roams Charleston
What a delightful book! I can't wait to share it with my grandchildren. The imagination of the story and the original paintings on each page makes you wish for more. How else would you have a country horse like Rosebud find her way to her dream city of Charleston than behind a "great big truck of juicy orange carrots." Or what expression on Rosebud's face could you come up with more delightful as she contemplates the "slide down the amazing banister in The Nathaniel Russell House." Sally Smith does a wonderful job of letting your imagination soar as she and Rosebud take you roaming through Charleston. I am looking forward to enjoying this gem many times over.

Battle of the Rosebud: Prelude to the Little Big Horn (Montana and the West Series, Vol 5)
Published in Hardcover by Upton & Sons (February, 1988)
Author: Neil C. Mangum
Average review score:

A Total Picture of a Critical Battle of the Sioux War
Mangum, the Superintendent of the Little Big Horn (LBH) battlefield writes a portrayal of the Crook's campaign against the Sioux that culminates in the Battle of the Rosebud 8 days prior to Custer's attack. Since the LBH is roughly 30 miles southeast of the LBH, Mangum is extraordinarily familiar with the battlefield that still looks like it did 134 years ago. The book covers Crook's earlier March campaign where he was first in the field which peaked at a failed attempt to destroy a predominately Cheyenne village which also included some Sioux on the Powder. Crook again restarts in June with almost 200 Shoshone and Crow allies. As Mangum expertly retells the battle, Crook is surprised while encamped leisurely along Rosebud Creek on June 17. Mangum notes that Crook was similarly surprised also with great consequences in the battle of Cedar Creek in 1864 where he was surprised by Jubal Early. In the description of the battle, Mangum points out that if it wasn't for the Shoshone and Crow who spotted the Sioux and Cheyenne first relatively distant from camp while also absorbing the initial attack, Crook's command may have been destroyed. The allies gave Crook's troopers a chance to prepare for the attack. Crook's forces, which included mule mounted infantry and miners, stemmed the attack but as Mangum points out, the Sioux seemed to come at Crook from three sides from the high ground to the north. After Crook seems to control the battle, Colonel Royall with his calvary battalion rolls up the Indian right so successfully, his enthusiasm isolates himself from Crook allowing the Sioux and Cheyenne to consolidate against him requiring a furious battle of retrograde movements causing the most severe casualties of Crook's forces. Mangum states that Crook was in peril with Royall's potential collapse because Crook sent off another battalion to the Indian's left in search of their village that was not in the immediate area as perceived. Only the recall of Mills saves the day but the Sioux and Cheyenne have initiated enough casualties and psychological harm to cause Crook to retire and take over a month to retrofit his command. I was at the Rosebud site in 1999 and had I read Mangum's book with the terrain maps, my tour would have been far more beneficial. The battlefield today is a State park and the modest valley that Crook stopped in on June 17 looks is framed with high hills and interesting landmarks like Conical Hill. This is a great book about a key battle that indicated that the Sioux and Cheyenne were agressive in defending their village which was overlooked by all of Sheridan's generals. This battle besmirched Crook's otherwise great post Civil War career.

As good as it gets
Between the confusion typical of any engagement and the scarcity of surviving testimony, it may be that no definitive account of any Euro-American vs. American Indian battle can ever be produced. However, Neil Mangum has produced a through, balanced, and convincing book that is as close as any such work may ever come to being authoritative.

riveting in all it's accuracy
This is by far the most intriguing and accurate book I have read concerning the Rosebud. Neil Mangum's writing is accurate and a complete joy to read.

Reap the Whirlwind: The Battle of the Rosebud June 1876
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Bantam Books (March, 1995)
Author: Terry C. Johnston
Average review score:

One of the best of the Plainsman series
Terry Johnston makes the battle come alive, the way he moves from how Crazy Horse is dealing with the battle, General Crook to Miles and Royall is incredible. I have become completely intrigued with the Rosebud Battle and looking for additional information. The whole Plainsman series is very good and I've enjoyed reading them all, they continue to get better and better. Can't wait to pick up the next one.

Johnson continues to make historical drama personal
His descriptions of the terrain, weather at the time of year, wildlife, and general conditions of the southeastern Montana Territory are so vividly accurate as to envelope the senses into believing you are there with Crook and his men (and woman). He takes a single historical act and brings it to life through the personalities of the characters replete with all of their emotions.Excellent reading. The pages move at a pace much quicker than expected.

Rosebud and Red Flannel

Perfect for bedtime!
I'm so glad to see this book still in print! This was a favorite "Bedtime Storytime" book in our public library when it first came out...and the story bears out that love is stronger than adversity, longer-lasting than physical beauty, and, in the end, the rewards of love far outweigh vanity and pride. A sweet and funny book for all ages, especially for those with a favorite pair of pajamas that are put on the clothesline to dry!

Give this book to someone you love
I am delighted that this book is back in print! It is an engaging story illustrated with gorgeous watercolors. Rosebud is a rather refined nightgown, and is not impressed at first with Red Flannel, the pair of long johns that adores her. How her opinion of him changes and her respect for him grows is a story that parallels many a human love. Their deep commitment to each other is a lesson in lasting love. This book would be a lovely wedding present.

Blood High the Graduation: A Story of the Vengeance of the Rosebud Slasher
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (November, 2001)
Author: Darrell A. Lane
Average review score:

Why Can't All Sequels Be Like This?
This is the second part of the "Blood High" series. The Rosebud Slasher is back after seven months to paint grad night red with some of the grossest mureders I've ever read, and I stayed up late just to finish it. Yes, it's violent and there's a lot of sex, but the characters come to life with eerie resonance; and the insidious humor was very much like a James Kisner or Alan Brooker novel. Oh, and I should warn you about the ice pick scene. And the trip to Hell.

It's About Time!!!
Ms Green!...All honor and respect due to you!... Such a long awaited book...As an obese woman, no one knows the loneliness and lack of support when you are on this journey of weight loss.
Your book has helped me through some of my worst days. I can even laugh some about my "delicate condition". The motivations are so inspiring, I can hardly wait until the next day to read.
Thank you, thank you!...

strong and real
this is not the type of book where the women go running through the forest in high heels. It is well written with strong, intelligent, and realistic characters. I fell in love with Sin the minute he came into view. And, I do mean view..it is written so well you can actually see him. great book looking for more. Faye...where are you?
